Those Gallant AC2s

(Written by an elderly gent in Halifax, W.Yorks, and sent to Jean Holmes, of "The Battle of Britain Society")

Lords of the Air, they call them
They speak of their growing fame
The front page of every paper
Is adorned with some pilot's name.

Stories of deeds of valour performed
By great men of the sky
Tales of Heinkels and Dorniers
Crashing to earth to die.

But there are men that don't get medals,
You never see their names
They don't go up in the pale blue sky
Or pose for the name of a plane.

Their job is not romantic,
For they're not in the public eye.
But they are heroes the same as the pilots,
And I'll tell you the reason why.

They are up in the morning early
Still working late at night
To keep engines running sweetly
And to see all pressures are right.

So next time you see a picture
Of pilots and smiling crews
Think of the men behind them -
Those gallant AC2s.
